Cool interactive google map of new murals in Indianapolis!

Indystar.com has a cool new interactive map of the new murals going up around Indianapolis in preparation for the superbowl. [Guide to new Downtown murals]

It seems they are missing some pictures and info on some of them, but then again, some of these are documenting the location of planned murals that aren't painted yet!

It is obvious to anyone that maps, geospatial, and location data are being used more and more, everywhere you look. I wonder if there is a market for a SaaS google map creator app for smaller/medium sized companies with less technical staff to implement something like this?

I just wanted to share because I thought it was nice usage example of a simple google map. A recent interest of mine is to be come an expert with the Google maps API.

Here is my progress so far at building a web app using the google maps API: (Not very much, but a start)

My Google Maps API v3 Sandbox

Tenative name: "MapSource"

The vague ideas for my web app idea are:

Offering a service to be used as a "Retail location finder creator", "Geodata browser / CMS", "People/location finder creator", and "Asset management" tool.

The tool will be targeted to companies with geospatial data that could be better analyzed and searched on a map. This applies well to many kinds of markets, ranging from real estate, retail, professional service industries, to logistics, technology, telecom, and transportation.

I am hoping to find a few willing alpha testers or contributors, so if you are interested, please send me an email!

Magic folder button in Windows 7 - Time saving tip!

I was sitting here working on my portfolio website, when I found a cool little time-saving trick in Windows 7. I can't believe that I'm just discovering this. Just wanted to share it really quick.

Shortcut

If you have any folder or explorer window open, right click on the folder icon in the task bar, and you will get a 'recent' listing of all folders you had open previously that you may have closed and would like to re-open. If you're like me and have folders within folders withing folders to stay somewhat organized, it saves you the time of digging around for what you want to re-open!

Indiana University offers public e-waste recycling day

When logging in to my college web portal to do some studying, I noticed that my school had been recognized as a "sustainability star" for "taking a byte out of landfills"(cheesy). (Campus Technology list). This is pretty cool.

According to Susan Coleman, senior communications and sustainability specialist, the recycling services are provided free by Apple, which works with Sims Recycling Solutions to melt down equipment for reuse.

I checked out the official site for IU's E-Waste collection days and this year's event is coming up in a few weeks. Now I just need to get my old CRTs together and all my other unneeded equipment loaded in the trunk of my car. I'll drop it off so I can do my part to save the world from becoming the giant landfill such as the one portrayed in Wall-E.
